The Chemical Makeup of Tears

I work with a lot of people who share with me that they feel like they could cry forever if they let themselves. There is a fear that if they open the floodgates, they will keep flowing endlessly, to the point of making it difficult to function.

In my many years of experience, the tears always find a place to pause; and if that takes 2 weeks, 2 hours, or two months, then that is what your body & soul truly needs. I emphasize needs, because your body knows what it needs whether your thoughts agree or not. Especially when we are talking about a mind / body relationship that isn’t fully integrated and healthy.

And here is a crucial bit of priceless information about what tears are made of:

  • Protiens (Including Stress Hormones like cortisol!)
  • Antibodies
  • Mucus
  • Water
  • Salt

The tears you cry, when you feel deep emotion have a high concentration of stress hormones in them -that the body needs to get rid of.

Knowing this, doesn’t it make you want to cry as much as your beautiful eyes want? I makes me want to. We have enough things going on in our daily lives that the more stress we can release the better! ❤️

Migraines & Headaches

The first, most important thing to do is to drink the recommended amount of water for your weight (at least 60oz p/day) depending on your size and activity level. If you have been drinking less than that on a regular basis you are most likely chronically dehydrated and that is bound to cause headaches and trigger migraines.

Next in level of importance is sleeping at least 6 hrs p/night, avoiding foods that aren’t good for your individual constitution, and getting enough physical movement/exercise (walking for 20 minutes a day is a good start).

Adrenals and Caffeine… A lot of people that come in to see me drink coffee every day. This is not healthy. Yes, you’ll find plenty of articles talking about how coffee is actually a good thing for you, even on a daily basis; I disagree. It basically blocks your brain’s receptors from responding to your body’s true energy level & needs, this is not healthy. It numbs your mind’s response to your body when it needs something like rest and overtaxes your adrenal glands. I know life can be challenging, and showing up “happy” to work is not always the easiest thing to do; but the sooner you learn how to do that without coffee, the more in integrity with your body and nature you’ll be. This harmonious integrity you’ll then have within yourself will affect all areas of your life, including headaches and migraines.

In terms of what I can do for you, craniosacral therapy is the best long term physical treatment modality I have found for helping my patients. When done consistently as a preventative therapy, it keeps your nervous system in a state that is prohibitive to migraines and headaches.

Breathwork

Breathwork influences the autonomic nervous system, promoting relaxation or alertness by modulating heart rate, blood pressure, and stress levels. Controlled breathwork can foster balance and calmness within the body and mind, as well as assist in releasing stuck energy & emotion.

Inner Parts Work

Inner parts work, including approaches like Internal Family Systems (IFS) and The Tamura Method, involves exploring and understanding different facets of one's psyche or internal "parts." These parts represent distinct aspects of an individual's personality, emotions, and experiences. Through therapeutic interventions, individuals can foster self-awareness, integrate these parts, and promote emotional healing and growth.

Myofascial Release (MFR) - John F Barne's Approach

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a manual therapy technique that focuses on releasing tension and restrictions in the fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, and organs. Barnes' approach involves sustained pressure and stretching to facilitate the release of fascial restrictions, promoting improved flexibility, range of motion, and alleviation of pain. Addressing fascial restrictions can have positive effects on past trauma trapped in the tissue, as well as overall well-being by addressing the root causes of physical discomfort and dysfunction.
